The most important challenge in protecting
endangered species is the federal government’s underfunding
and under-enforcement of the ESA. Congress had the wisdom
in 1973 to recognize that, without an all-out effort to
prevent the extinction of the native plants, animals, and
ecosystems that make this country great, we would be guilty
of a great moral harm against the natural world and would
place the well-being of humans at stake. It is time for
this visionary act – one of the strongest environmental
laws in the world – to be fully implemented and be provided
with the resources necessary to defend species from extinction. How
will we explain to our children..
Forest Guardians' Defense of Endangered
Species
Since we lack the money and clout
of the destructive industries we fight, Forest Guardians
must make choices about which endangered species we work
on. We recognize that all native species must be protected
from extinction. To maximize the effectiveness of our endangered
species work, we prioritize the protection of umbrella,
keystone, and indicator species, whose safeguarding provides
collateral defense to associated species.
