River Restoration Opportunities

In this land of little rain, healthy green river corridors are literally the lifeblood of our communities. We are working to restore our riparian areas.

State Lands

In 1996, Forest Guardians pioneered a path to help bring restoration to state lands by becoming the first non-ranching entity to successfully out-compete ranchers for a grazing lease. We’ve challenged the livestock industry’s stranglehold on state lands and now we’re working to heal as many waterways as possible on these publicly owned state lands.

As a result of successful litigation, Forest Guardians has opened the door to individuals and organizations to lease state lands in New Mexico and Arizona. There are still millions of acres and miles and miles of streams that are in need of protection and restoration on state lands.

City and County Lands

We are working with local governments, including the City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County. This collaboration has allowed Forest Guardians to protect and restore nearly four miles of the Santa Fe River.

We are currently investigating other options to expand river restoration with other Southwestern cities, towns and local governments.

Private Lands

In 2004, Forest Guardians signed our first-ever agreement with a private land-owner who shares our vision of preserving wildlands for future generations. We are interested in creating and holding land trusts (conservation easements) in limited instances, focusing exclusively where there is the potential to conserve ecologically significant lands where river restoration and protection opportunities exist.
