Lost River Preserve

In an effort to protect and highlight the importance of riparian ecosystems in New Mexico, Forest Guardians has recently acquired the lease rights to two New Mexico State Land parcels totaling 1,120 acres of vital riparian habitat in southern New Mexico. Forest Guardians will be working to restore the Lost River parcel. The other parcel contains a portion of the La Luz Creek.

The Preserve

The Lost River preserve contains over a mile of the Lost River, important habitat for the threatened White Sands pupfish, and is infested with salt cedar. Forest Guardians began leasing the Lost River parcel in 2006 and will clear invasive salt cedar so native trees will thrive here once again.
