La Luz Creek Preserve

In an effort to protect and highlight the importance of riparian ecosystems in New Mexico, Forest Guardians has recently acquired the lease rights to two New Mexico State Land parcels totaling 1,120 acres of vital riparian habitat in southern New Mexico. Forest Guardians is working to restore the La Luz Creek parcel, which was being ravished by off-road vehicle use when we leased it in 2006. The other parcel includes a portion of the Lost River.

The Preserve

La Luz Creek and is located downstream from the Alamogordo Water Treatment Plant. The lush riparian ecosystem on this parcel is currently being decimated by off-highway vehicles, which use the land as a race course. Local community members in the area have applauded our efforts to eliminate off-highway vehicle use and will actively participate in fencing the parcel to protect these important lands.
